It’s funny how paths cross in a seemingly “meant to happen” kind of way. In the case of Hip Hop producer Khris Audio and emcee Ben Phrases, it’s surprising that their paths didn’t cross sooner. Having spent their childhoods in the same neighborhood, they didn’t meet until both were in college in Orlando, Fl in 2006. Sharing a love for the classic boom-bap sound, it only made sense for the two to begin collaborating on tracks for each other’s projects.

It wasn’t until Audio’s debut Superhero Vol. 1—in which Ben contributed his talents to three songs—that both realized that there was a true musical chemistry. After months of setting up their own shows, the Central Florida-based duo became Khris Audio and Ben Phrases, and began working on their collaborative debut Soul Addicted. “Soul Addicted isn’t just a musical project that we’ve put together. It’s the general idea that your soul is passionate, or addicted, about a particular craft or aspect of your life. It’s that drive that keeps you pushing towards your goals”, as Ben describes it. With Khris Audio’s sample-laden production, combined with Ben Phrases’s real-life content and witty lyricism, Soul Addicted is a refreshing movement that is certain to appeal to backpackers and southern rap fans alike.
